Jean McCauley

I was an English major and an Art minor when I was in college, but upon graduating I didn’t have much of an opportunity or the funds to pursue painting. When my sons were grown and in Graduate School, I went back to work but decided I would take some classes and try to get back in touch with art.

I have been fortunate enough to have taken classes and studied with many wonderful artists from around the state. I am a member of numerous painting groups and organizations. Some of which are Art Alliance and Friends of DOMA (David Owsley Museum of Art, Ball State University), Muncie Art Students’ League (past- President 2015-2016) Co-President (2020-2021), member of Richmond Art Museum, AAHC (Art Association of Henry County), and the Art Association of Randolph County to name a few. I also have been a member of the Muncie Artists Guild for about 20 years.

Some of my most special memories are of participating in the making of two murals, one for the city of Muncie and the other for Ball State University, being one of fourteen artists to paint a violin for the 50th anniversary of Emens Auditorium and being able to attend two artists in residency programs as a companion with my son, David. The first of these was at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont while the second was at the Santa Fe Art Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I also was honored to be a part of the fundraiser Art of Sail Gala event curated by my son. I painted a 36” x 36” painting on a retired jib sail from the Impossible Dream, a 60’ wheelchair-accessible catamaran. The money was in support and honor of The Shake A Leg Sports Center’s 25th anniversary.  They are located in Miami, Florida and help children and adults with disabilities enjoy the water.

My paintings have been inspired by the beauty and simplistic aspects of nature and the world in which we live. I hope that my work evokes a pleasing and meaningful calm, capturing a sense of peace for a quieter, more thoughtful, almost forgotten time.
